Every Tuesday afternoon in the month of June, June 2, 9, 16, 23, and 30, the Holland Computing Center (HCC) is offering a series of weekly workshops. These workshops will cover the basics of using HCC clusters and an overview of our other resources.

These workshops are ideal for individuals new to Holland resources or who are interested in using high-performance computing resources but don't know how to start.

We will also have a special topic during this workshop series:

  • June 30th: GP-ENGINE - Migrating ML/AI Workshop to Nautilus

This year, the workshops will be delivered in a hybrid manner, remotely via Zoom and on UNL's City Campus. Because of the hands-on aspect of the workshops, the number of registrations will be limited. Please register for only the sessions you are interested in and available to attend.

When: June 2, 9, 16, 23, 30 - 12:30 pm to 5 pm

Cost: Free!

Where: Delivered Remotely via Zoom and Nebraska Hall 213 on UNL City Campus

Participants are strongly encouraged to register and attend in-person to get the full benefit of this workshop series.

Agenda:

  • June 2nd: Connecting to HCC Clusters and Introduction to Bash

  • June 9th: Introduction to Bash (cont.), Introduction to HCC, Submitting Jobs, and Handling Data at HCC

  • June 16th: Handling Data at HCC (cont.), Good Practices, Open OnDemand

  • June 23rd: Using Software on HCC

  • June 30th: GP-ENGINE - Migrating ML/AI Workshop to Nautilus

Remote Attendees will need to maintain a video connection to the workshop during the entire session.

Session Details

June 2nd: Connecting to HCC Clusters and Introduction to Bash

Learn how to connect to Holland's High Performance Computing cluster, Swan, and how to navigate in the Linux command line with the Bash shell.

June 9th: Introduction to Bash (cont.) and Introduction to HCC, Submitting Jobs, and Handling Data at HCC

Continue mastering the Bash shell by learning how to write reusable shell scripts to help automate tasks. We will also be looking at the basics of working with Holland resources. Topics include an overview of HCC offerings, submitting batch jobs and handling data.

June 16th: Handling Data at HCC (cont.), Good Practices, and Open OnDemand

Continue learning the basics of working with Holland resources, including tips on how to optimize workflows, and an introduction to using Open On-Demand for Jupyter Notebooks and browser-based access to HCC clusters, and a coverage of transferring data, and a hands on introduction to HCC's newest storage system.

June 23rd: Using Software on HCC

Learn how to use software on HCC clusters. Topics include an recap of using HCC Modules to access pre-installed software and creating customized environments and installing software with the Anaconda Package Manager. We will also be holding a panel on effective use of the Swan and other HCC resources. Bring your questions on how to optimize and accelerate your research computing!

June 30th: GP-ENGINE - Migrating ML/AI Workshop to Nautilus

A hands-on introduction to leveraging the large distributed computing resources available through the National Research Platform (NRP). Researchers will learn how to migrate an AI/ML workflow from their local computer or HPC Cluster to the NRP. By accessing Nautilus, you can gain access to a vast array of cutting-edge GPUs, ideal for facilitating AI research and accelerating your research.

As a reminder, HCC is also hosting an Intro to HPC in Python and Snakemake Workshop on May 18th and 20th at UNL’s City Campus. More details available on the workshop website: https://unlhcc.github.io/2026-05-18-UNL/
